LET'S STOP THE "SPEEDERS" ON THIS ROAD

November 2025 has seen the needless deaths of 2 more people on this notorious road between Baldock and Royston.
Two of the latest victims happened to be my friends. This has motivated me to help take up the mantle for this campaign.
Other campaigners like Darren King have had close calls on this road, and Sophie Brewitt is currently recovering from a major accident earlier in the year. A lot of people will know Lynsey Langdon who has been campaigning about this road for years after a serious accident with her husband.
Lawrence Alderman – Roe Green, Sandon

Every month for the past 40 years there have been close near misses, serious accidents and Deaths on the A505.
Originally, built in 1975 with crossovers to allow local villages to access, there were 1500 cars per day using the road.
Today there are
50,000 cars each day.
The new tunnel bypass from the A1(M) at Baldock has turned this route as a favoured one to get from the West End of London to Cambridge and the A14.
As a major artery, the Dual Carriageway has a 70mph limit.
Ordinarily this has been calculated to be a safe speed for motorists and those that use the Crossovers.
The issue is that despite fixed speed cameras being in certain positions, these become known by regular motorists and some “speeders” accelerate to 90 or even 100mph each side of the restrictions. This exacerbates the issue and makes this road inherently dangerous for those trying to join or cross the road.
We are not advocating 50mph speed restrictions necessarily, as this will create lines of slow-moving cars at Peak times, which will make it almost impossible to enter the carriageway from the side turnings by local residents.

Ideally of course the crossovers are shut and 2 roundabouts installed at Odsey Station and Slip End turnings.
However, this process in the current financial climate, will be hugely costly and take years to carry out.

In the meantime, our Campaign proposes that Average Speed Cameras are placed at each end of this road from when the road narrows at the Wallington turn off - to the McDonalds Roundabout.

Evidence has shown that Average Speed Cameras work as a great deterrent – eg major Roadworks on Motorways.

The cost of installing these is relatively inexpensive against other measures, but would still be over £100,000.

Councils and Highways have been talking for years about doing something about this road. There can be no further excuses if we can demonstrate that local people are behind this and want to directly contribute to make this happen.

It is time for ACTION NOW!

We have started a “Fighting Fund” Appeal to raise sufficient funds to help these cameras to be put in place, and to motivate the authorities to act quickly.
